Aliens: Colonial Marines

Aliens: Colonial Marines was originally to be released for the PlayStation 2 published by Electronic Arts in 2001 but was cancelled.
Aliens: Colonial Marines (2001) shared the same subject matter and setting as the upcoming Gearbox-developed game. Its story was to be set between the events of the films Aliens and Alien³, concerning a rescue team of Colonial Marines searching for the USS Sulaco. Despite the similarities in gameplay and story Gearbox has claimed that their upcoming game is unrelated to this early version.

Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013) was first announced in late 2006 after Sega acquired the Aliens license, this was proposed in favour of Rebellion's Alien v Predator 3, in February 2008 the game's title was officially announced as Aliens: Colonial Marines with Gearbox as developers, after the release of Alien v Predator 3, at PAX 2010 Gearbox released screenshots with a teaser trailer and at E3 2011 setting a release date of spring 2012, being delayed to late 2012 before again being delayed to Feb 2013.

Fox Interactive was a video game publisher and developer mainly concerned with titles based on 20th Century Fox properties, such as the Alien and Predator film franchises, The X-Files, Avatar, 24 and the Die Hard series of films. Rebellion a UK-based computer games super-developer was established in 1992. Their first major successes were Alien Vs Predator on the Atari Jaguar in 1995 and Aliens Vs. Predator on PC in 1999. Rebellion’s approach to game production is focused primarily on cross-platform innovations and product quality.

Gearbox Software, founded in January 1999 by a team who previously worked together at 3D Realms and Bethesda Softworks. Gearbox Software started with developing expansions to Valve Software's Half-Life. Porting Half-Life to console platforms (each with new game content) followed, building the company's experience in console game-making, in addition to enhancing and building upon the successful Counter-Strike branch of the Half-Life franchise.
